So you are in your 50’s and you are thinking of the next greatest change in your life: retirement. You may not have planned much but now it is the time. Can you afford to retire or are you thinking of semi retirement? This is becoming to be quite popular with baby boomers.
So you want to balance work with retirement and have both of two worlds? You can do this in 3 ways. You either can get a part time job you enjoy, start your own business with time for leisure, or alternate work with retirement with jobs or a business.
You can start a business, a new enjoyable career, or job. Consider your retirement goals. Do you want to travel and enjoy time with your family and grandchildren.
Answer These Questions
Get your journal and write out the answers to the following questions:
- If you could retire today, what would you do?
- What are your retirement goals?
- Do you have money saved?
- Can you afford retirement?
- Do you need to work part-time or part of the time?
Nowadays, retirement looks different for us than our parents and grandparents. That is okay. Many people feel bored and lost in retirement Most people (women) live 20 or more years after their retirement.
Looking for a vocation is key in semi-retirement. Find a job or business you enjoy and like, and has meaning. This may be time to change careers or jobs that you don’t get enjoyment from any more.
Spend time with your journal. Talk to your husband or partner. Get on the same page. You may want to plan together.
Take your time planning for semi-retirement. This may not be fun, but in the end will lead to fulfillment.
